Before setting off on your trip, it’s important to undertake some crucial planning and preparation steps to ensure a safe travel experience. There’s no such thing as planning to fail, but you can certainly fail to plan.

Research Your Destination

Spend time researching your destination thoroughly. Familiarize yourself with local customs, traditions, laws, and potential safety concerns. We suggest reviewing current travel advisories and enrolling in the S.T.E.P program to stay updated with late-breaking developments.

Share Your Itinerary

Inform a trusted friend or family member about your travel plans. Share your itinerary, including flight details, accommodation information, and contact numbers, to ensure someone knows where you are in case of emergencies. Depending on the situation, you might want to add safety net of regularly checking in so your trusted contact will know more precisely when and where you deviated from your planned itinerary.

Secure Travel Insurance

Travel insurance provides financial protection in case of unforeseen events like medical emergencies, trip cancellations, or lost baggage. Carefully review the policy to understand what it covers and ensure it meets your needs. Some policies include emergency evacuation and in-country support.

Personal Safety

While traveling, it’s crucial to prioritize your personal safety. Here are some important tips to consider –

Be Vigilant: Stay alert and aware of your surroundings, particularly in crowded areas or unfamiliar environments. Keep an eye on your belongings and avoid displaying valuable items. Avoid areas with known criminal activity and protests whenever possible.

Use Reliable Transportation: When using public transportation, choose reputable companies and official taxi services. Research and understand local transportation options in advance to avoid unsafe or unregulated providers. Don’t be afraid to ask the driver to display their credentials and negotiate a price before entering the cab.

Keep Emergency Contacts Handy: Save important contact numbers, including local emergency services and your embassy or consulate, on your phone or in a physical notebook. In fact, having a paper copy of emergency contact numbers and your hotel location is a great way to recover any phone getting lost, damaged, or simply running low on battery.

Protect Your Belongings in Transit

Protecting your belongings while traveling is essential. These are some of the practices we have implemented to keep our stuff safe on the road.

Use Secure Luggage: Invest in sturdy luggage with reliable locks, or use travel locks to secure your bags. Consider using luggage tags with limited personal information to avoid potential identity theft and putting more detailed contact information inside your bag so the proper personnel will have more tools to return your bag. Many suitcases look alike, so putting an easily recognizable attachment to your luggage, like a colored cloth or sticker, will keep people from accidentally taking the wrong bag.

Carry-On Essentials: Keep essential items such as medication, important documents, and a change of clothes in your carry-on bag. This ensures you have essential items with you, even if your checked luggage is lost or delayed. It may take up to 48 hours for lost luggage to get back to you, so having this reserve will keep your trip rolling through many obstacles.

Pack Wisely: Having the right gear will improve your safety and comfort during your travels. Pack essential items such as a first aid kit, weather-appropriate clothing, a portable charger, and a reliable travel lock for your bags.

Stay Connected

Maintaining communication while traveling is vital for receiving trip updates and security warnings, reaching out in an emergency, or getting local transportation. Also, studies have shown that paper maps identify you as a tourist, making you a target for crime. Electronic navigation is often easier, safer, and automatically integrated with public transit. These are some of the best tricks we’ve found to stay connected.

Virtual Private Networks (VPNs): A VPN helps secure your online activities and protect sensitive data, especially when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks, like hotel lobbies or train stations. We personally love Surfshark as it is whip fast for steaming tv and movies!

Utilize an eSIM Card: Consider purchasing an eSIM card or activating an international roaming plan to have reliable communication during your trip. We’ve found eSims to be easy and effective, even on locked devices. Our favorite eSIM provider is AloSIM.

Utilize Safety Apps

In today’s digital age, having a safe travel app or two on your smartphone can significantly enhance your travel experience. Here are some recommended safety apps:

Emergency Assistance Apps: Apps like “SOS Buddy” or “TravelSafe” provide quick access to emergency services, location tracking, and the ability to send distress signals to pre-selected contacts.

Translation Apps: Having a translation app, such as “Google Translate,” can help you communicate with locals in case of language barriers or emergencies.

Navigation and Maps: Utilize navigation apps like “Google Maps” or “Citymapper” to navigate unfamiliar cities or find your way back to your accommodations.

Safety on the Accommodation Front

Your choice of accommodation plays a vital role in ensuring a safe travel experience. Here are some tips to keep in mind:

Read Reviews: Before booking accommodations, read reviews from previous guests. Pay attention to mentions of safety, cleanliness, and the surrounding neighborhood. Be sure to check multiple review sites and Google because we’ve found some hotels can game one set of reviews but we got a clear picture when we switched sites.

Secure Your Belongings: Use the safety features available in your accommodation, such as in-room safes or lockers. Keep your valuables secure and avoid leaving them unattended in public spaces.

Research Neighborhood Safety: Before venturing out, research the safety of the neighborhoods you plan to explore. Locals or online travel communities can provide valuable insights into areas to avoid or extra precautions to take.

Keep Loved Ones Updated
