Disney’s Grand Floridian

We’ll address the mouse in the house early, since Disney World is iconic to Orlando. If you’ve never been to Disney as an adult, you don’t know what you’re missing. Even if you’re not ready to fully commit yourself to a trip to the House Mouse, Disney Hotels are something special, especially the Disney Deluxe Resort Hotels. Each property is themed and immersive to transport you away in time and space.

Grand Floridian captures the essence of a turn of the century Atlantic City beach resort. In many ways, it reminds me of staying at Hotel Del Coronado on a romantic Southern California getaway with birdcage elevators and the staff in period clothing. There’s even afternoon tea in the Garden View Tea Room, an on-site spa, and a sandy beach that, unfortunately, doesn’t access the water.

Like all Disney Hotels, your stay includes Extra Magic Hours and 60-day fast passes to optimize your visit to the park. Best of all, the Grand Floridian’s proximity to the Magic Kingdom means that the most magical place on Earth is only a short boat ride or one monorail stop away.

You don’t need to enter the parks to experience the magic of a romantic Disney resort. The Grand Floridian is home to Victoria & Albert’s, Disney’s only “AAA Fine Dining” restaurant and Narcoossee’s, where you can watch the fireworks over the Seven Seas Lagoon from the outdoor terrace. A trip to the South Pacific is only a short walk away, too, if you head next door to visit the neighboring Polynesian Resort.

Four Seasons Resort Orlando

The Four Seasons is objectively one of the best properties in Orlando that happens to be at Disney World. It’s close enough to see the fireworks from select rooms or the roof-top restaurants, but it isn’t on the monorail or canal network. You still get the 60-day fast pass and Extra Magic Hours, but you are taking a short shuttle ride to get to the park.

Instead of an immersive experience, the Four Season offers pure luxury, including marble bathrooms, C.O. Bigelow toiletries, and high thread count bedding with plush pillows.

You can enter the park early during Extra Magic Hours long before the general public, book your fast passes exactly when you want them (1 hour after rope drop), and ride every ride you want before lunch. Then, return to your luxurious getaway to float in the lazy river or lounge in the adult-only pool. Then, enjoy a fireworks dinner on property and retire to your room to take full advantage of the amenities. The combination of access and amenities makes the Four Seasons Orlando one of the most romantic resorts in Orlando if you can afford the rate.

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge

Disney’s Animal Kingdom Lodge is a Disney Deluxe Resort Hotel themed that transports you to a traditional ‘kraal’ (village) on the African savanna. Over 30 species of African wildlife roam the plains surrounding the resort. Your room at the safari-like lodge has carved furniture, mosquito net canopies over the bed, and, with a little planning, a balcony that overlooks the savanna.

A perfect day at the Animal Kingdom begins before rope drop. With your Extra Magic Hours and Fast Pass, you explore all of Animal Kingdom Park before the heat of the day. You might even take the Avatar Flight of Passage twice before the general public arrives.

Later in the day, take the Wanyama Safari. First, your small group (<12 people) takes a 90-minute jeep ride through the savanna. Your private guide leads you through close and intimate animal encounters before returning to the award-winning African cuisine at Jiko – The Cooking Place. Be sure to order some South African wine as AKL has the largest selection in the world outside of Africa. (also, be sure to book this well in advance because this tour sells out quickly).

Return to the park at night for The River of Light show, and then retire to your room for a little jungle love. After all, when the sun sets, you and me baby ain’t nothin’ but mammals…. 😉 The immersive African experience makes the Animal Kingdom Resort one of the most unique romantic hotels in Orlando.

Bohemian Hotel Celebration

The Disney Development Corporation designed and built the town of Celebration in the mid-90s. They strove to develop a community worthy of the Disney brand and legacy that extended to Walt Disney’s vision of an Experimental Prototype Community of Tomorrow (EPCOT). The results feel like you’re in Mayberry except Spanish Moss is clinging to massive oak trees. You’d almost expect June Cleaver to greet you at the door with a plate of warm cookies when you walk in.

The Bohemian Hotel sits waterside on the town lake where a manicured path takes you into the idyllic coffee shops and cozy restaurants of the town square. The polished and comfy rooms blend perfectly with the tranquility of Celebration to escape the ‘More is More’ commercialism of Orlando, even though it’s only a short drive to Disney or I-Drive.

Celebration is also at the gateway to Kissimmee, Orlando’s other tourist zone. You can do everything from airboat tours to machine gun shooting ranges here. The Old Town USA cruise-ins every Saturday night features live music, entertainment & classic cars that complete your 50’s sitcom experience. There are even airboat tours of Lake Kissimmee and kayaking on Shingle Creek, the headwaters of the Everglades for adventure lovers. One of the best romantic hotels in Orlando might just be in Kissimmee.

Waldorf Astoria Orlando

The Waldorf Astoria features elegant luxury at a third the cost of the Four Seasons. It still offers transportation to the parks, 60-day Fastpass, and Extra Magic Hours, but the shuttle ride will take a little longer, and you’re also going to see fireworks from the property.

You still have a top-notch spa and an ample selection of on-premise dining. All the rooms feature large bathrooms and extremely plush beds for the snugglers and two pools, an expanded fitness center and bike rentals for the sweaters.

You’re also closer to I-Drive, Universal, and Disney Springs, which opens up a whole new world of dining and entertainment options. On the subject of food, you’ll be a short trip up Apopka Vineland Rd from Restaurant Row, where more than 200 restaurants line Sand Lake Blvd between I-4 and Apopka Vineland Rd. The Waldorf Astoria is an excellent blend of Disney and Orlando wrapped in a layer of luxury. With all this bang for your buck, the Waldorf Astoria is one of the best values in romantic Orlando hotels.

Loews Portofino Bay Hotel

Disney isn’t the only theme park game in town. There’s a vocal minority of teens, Harry Potter fans, and coaster lovers who say Universal is better. What do I know? Well, I do know one thing. I would look to book Loews Portofino Bay for a romantic getaway at Universal.

It’s hard to look at the Italian style of Portofino Bay and not feel like you’re on a European tryst. You’ll almost feel the Mediterranean breezes between the terracotta facades, sailboats, and sun setting over the bay. Include delicious Italian food and wandering opera singers, and the mirage is complete.

By day, you get into the parks an hour before the general public. By night, you’ll enjoy their gorgeous spa, and three pools, including two quieter ones for couples and large guest rooms. You’ll also have access to all the Universal properties via the complimentary water taxi service.

Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes

The Ritz-Carlton, just a stone’s throw away from I-Drive, is perfect for a romantic rendezvous in the lap of luxury. You’re right around the corner from all the fun like the sky wheel at ICON Plaza, the 4-D theater at Pointe Orlando, and more dinner shows than you can shake a stick at.

You’re only a short hop from Disney or Universal with a shuttle ride, that is included in your resort fee. Entry is always free for Universal City Walk and Disney Springs. If you’d rather drive, there’s all-day free parking at Disney Springs and free parking after 6:00 at Universal.

While you’re at the Ritz, you can expect an authentic luxury experience complete with an elegant spa and attached golf course. Instead of cartoon ambiance, you are greeted with a minimalist aesthetic, sophisticated furnishings, and well-manicured grounds. Back in your room, you’ll find marbled bathrooms and the Ritz Carlton signature pillow top mattress.

With the Ritz Carlton credo to fulfill even the unexpressed wishes and needs of their guests, you’ll always have a memorable stay. No wonder the Ritz-Carlton keeps topping the lists of romantic hotels in Orlando, Florida.

Grand Bohemian Hotel Orlando

Downtown Orlando is only a half-hour up I-4 from International Drive (without traffic), but it feels like it’s worlds away. Instead of throngs of tourists, you’re in a hip urban oasis. Vinyl records, Lake Eola, farmer’s markets, and drag shows are just part of the experience. The real party begins at night along Orange Avenue. If you love to dance and drink till dawn, you’ll love Downtown Orlando.

With all those late-night libations, the aptly named Grand Bohemian is your perfect base just off Orange Avenue. Only, it’s more than a location; it’s a frame of mind. The 247-room Grand Bohemian Hotel is stylish and sleek. Over 150 pieces of art adorn the walls in a rolling art gallery. The retro-modern rooms feature purple velvet drapes, tall buttoned headboards, and Java wood. The most essential accessory to a romantic weekend is a magnificent bed with pillow-top mattresses and down duvets.

The Alfond Inn at Rollins College

Winter Park is the opposite side of Orlando from Disney, both geographically and philosophically. It’s a long-established community with local restaurants, natural parks, and an exquisite chain of lakes.

The Adventures in the Park package at the boutique Alfond Inn at Rollins College captures this spirit exquisitely. The package includes a 2-night stay, two Winter Park Boat tour tickets, two bike rentals, two tickets to the Albin Polasek Museum and Gardens, and two gourmet box lunches. Doesn’t that sound like a perfect picnic date?

The fun continues when you return to The Alfond Inn with a stunning conservatory, picturesque courtyards, and luxurious rooms to rival anything in Orlando. From staycations to vacations, the Alfond Inn might be just the spark you need to ignite your passion and escape the tourist zone.
